organise the seminar "What role can Ecoscore play in EU car labelling?" with the aim to give a clear understanding of the
Ecoscore and to start a debate on the elements to be taken into account in the
EU Car Labelling Directive 2020.
The Ecoscore methodology will be explained in detail. Comparison will be made with the ADAC WLTP Ecotest. Possible improvements will be dealt with like usage of real world data, car weight, consumer profiles and ways of communication.

When it comes to buying a new car,
health-friendly and eco-friendly criteria are increasingly important in making
a choice. Consumers need however guidance to help them in this decision.
Policy can assist by providing clearly defined standards and holistic concepts
to achieve green goals. This leaves a need for instruments enabling
consumers to reach well-founded buying decisions.
The showroom display of the EU car labelling from the year 2000 on gives a guidance to consumers of the CO2-emissions of cars. There is however the increasing gap between lab and real world figures, the importance of air pollutants that are not taken into account in the label and the relative nature of the label versus other cars in the same category. Not to speak about the increasing number of alternatively-fuelled cars. All this calls for a redefinition of the car label that would provide the necessary nudging of consumers towards clean cars
The European Commission undertook an evaluation of the 1999 Car Labelling Directive in 2016. About 30% of respondents to the EC questionnaire called for inclusion of information on air pollutant emissions on the label. In their 31 May 2017 Recommendation, the EC advises the Member states to consider whether to make information on air pollutants available to consumers with a view to raising awareness and enabling consumers to make an informed choice when purchasing a car. This as maximum values of real-driving emissions are available with the introduction of the WLTP and the real driving emission (RDE) test procedure.
